Captain Jay and Mate Joe, I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time my wife and I had on the Spellbound. Our trip to Miami would not have been the same if we did not spend the day on your vessel. I would like to say thanks and let your customers or those who go to your website what an experience we had: I would like to start by saying what a beautiful boat the Spellbound is. I didn't know what to expect as I had never deep sea fished. My wife had gone a few times before and I was very happy when she told me that this was the nicest fishing boat she had been on. It was both very clean and very comfortable. Both Captain Jay and his Mate- Joe, were wonderful and answered all of our questions while we were making our way to sea. Joe ran around the boat getting everything ready for fishing and also ensuring both Darlene and I were comfortable. Then came the fishing. Living in the middle of Canada, I had no idea what to expect. Not an easy drive to an ocean from Manitoba. My wife laughed as she could tell how anxious I was to start our afternoon aboard the Spellbound. The expertise of the areas were beyond what I expected. The Spellbound's Captain and Mate's knowledge of what was "biting" at what time of year as well as where to catch them amazed me. Our focus was on Amberjack, and that was what we hit first. I was thinking, "Wow, Captain Jay knows his stuff". My Golden Amberjack was quite a fighter and proved to me that I need to spend a little more time in the gym. However, the best was yet to come. I had mentioned prior to departure that I always dreamed of catching a shark. Mate Joe and I talked and he said it might be a little tough to get a shark, but fishing is never predictable. Good thing for us. A short time later, my adrenaline went through the roof when Captain Jay started screaming from the upper deck that there was a shark. We looked out back and sure enough, there he was. I have never experienced anything like the rush I had watching him take the bait. However, this is fishing and this shark wasn't meant to be. The excitement was intense and both Darlene and I were in heaven. I laughed a short time later when Darlene reeled in her first fish of the day. The way she fought that reel, I thought she had gotten the shark I had been dreaming of. The look on her face when she pulled in a fish my daughter later referred to as Nemo, made me laugh out loud. Now the highlight. I was up next and Mate Joe told me to strap in to the chair. I was about to fulfill one of my dreams. He handed me the rod and I was now fighting with a shark. I still can't explain the feeling. Mate Joe stood beside me and coached me with his expertise. We weren't letting this one get away. My wife was yelling like she won the lottery. This shark was not giving up without a fight. He didn't know, neither was I. Captain Jay from the upper deck telling me to get him "inch by inch". Mate Joe standing there encouraging me and keeping me calm. I would reel a little and the shark would run…a lot. Keep fighting is what I was thinking. Finally, Mate Joe yelled out that he could see him. I was elated. But we weren't done yet. The shark apparently knew the boat might be a bad thing for him, so he ran. Another fight. This time I knew he was tired. Mate Joe yelling up to the Captain that this was definitely a big one and he might need some help getting him in, gave me the energy I needed. Captain Jay running down the stairs and my wife jumping out of the way let me know he was big. Captain Jay and Mate Joe hooked the shark and the two of them struggled to get him in. I remember thinking, "this is unbelievable, I just want to see this thing". After a brief struggle, he was in the boat. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes. Captain Jay and Mate Joe looked as excited as me and my wife. That was a good feeling. The Captain then telling me that he was the biggest Silky Shark he had ever had on the boat was surreal. The professionalism and sincerity of Captain Jay and Mate Joe really, really impressed us. They both looked like they had caught their first fish ever. It still amazes me to think that these guys do this for a living and are that genuinely happy for their customers. We felt as though these people were friends of ours even though we had never met them prior to this day. I now have everyone I know calling to ask me about catching the "monster shark" and I get excited telling the story everytime. The experience was wonderful catching my shark, but what made it an experience I will never forget was the Captain and his Mate. I am not normally one to write appreciation letters or get overly impressed with something, but the Spellbound and it's crew definitely require a show of appreciation. Thanks guys for an experience we will never forget. We WILL be seeing you soon. You guys are great. Scott and Darlene Skene |
